Classic vs. Volume Extensions

Classic vs. Volume Extensions 2017-04-28T07:07:29+00:00

There are a two main types of eyelash extensions available to the client: Classic or Russian Volume

What is the difference?

Classic lash set - Eyelash Excellence

Classic lashes

Classic lashes are one extension applied to one natural lash only, therefore if you only have 50 suitable natural lashes per eye, then you will only achieve a look of 50 eyelash extensions, whereas if you have 100 natural lashes per eye then you will achieve a look of 100 extensions per eye.

Classic lashes are suitable for the following client:

  • Clients that have a good amount of healthy natural lashes
  • Clients that are younger and have few gaps in their lash line
  • Clients that desire a natural/medium effect
Russian Volume lash set - Eyelash Excellence

Russian Volume

Russian Volume is an extremely advanced technique that only the experienced and highly skilled technician can offer. Sadly there are a lot of technicians offering this treatment, but they are not correctly trained and are using incorrect techniques, or overloading the natural lashes. Here at Eyelash Excellence Ltd we see this far too often, so please be warned when researching your therapist.

Russian Volume is the use of multiple ultra fine extensions, that are hand created at the time of application by the therapist using their specially designed tweezers. The therapist skilfully creates bouquets of eyelash extensions that are then placed onto the natural lash in a fanned effect, to create extra fluff, coverage and fullness than cannot be created with classic extensions. Although we use multiple extensions, the fan is still placed onto one individually isolated natural lash in a method that encases the natural lash, and results in great retention with zero damage.

A good Russian Volume therapist is not created overnight. To learn this advanced technique takes many hours of practice, as well as additional training courses over the months and years. There are not that many ‘good’ Russian Volume therapists in the UK, due to the intricate and time-consuming nature of the treatment. Therefore, please do your research when looking for your technician

Russian Volume is the most versatile lash treatment that we offer, and will suit most clients. Russian Volume is perfect for the older client with sparse natural lashes, where extra coverage and a soft fluffy look is required (light weight volume set 3/4/D). Russian Volume is also suitable for the client who desires a more glamorous and thicker looking set than can be achieved with classic lashes (heavy weight volume set 5/6D). The level of fullness can vary with Russian Volume, which allows us to create the effect suited to the client’s requirements.

Please DO NOT confuse these hand-made Russian Volume fans with flare/cluster lashes than can be purchased in beauty stores – these are not the same. But sadly there are therapists attempting to pass them off as the same, and charging high prices for a subservient treatment.

Cluster lashes

Cluster lashes

Cluster/flare lashes are sometimes called ‘party lashes’ and are for short term wear only, and must only be applied with a weak latex-based strip lash glue and worn for a few days. However, there are therapists advertising them as Russian Volume and using our strong glues with them, and gluing them onto multiple lashes which then inhibits the growth patterns of the natural lashes and causes severe damage over time, as seen below.

There are also therapists using pre-purchased, pre-glued/made fans and then charging the same price for a lesser quality service. The problem with any premade fan is that it is already pre-glued, which means the fan has to be re-dipped in the adhesive, which can overload the extension and cause extra weight. Pre-made fans cannot “wrap” onto the natural lash, which is an attachment technique that is used to create a seamless bond and excellent retention. Pre-made fans do not bond seamlessly; therefore you are paying the same price for a poorly bonded extension that will not last as long.
