As lash artists, it’s not uncommon to see a spike in client sensitivities during the spring and summer months. With pollen counts at their peak, allergy season is in full swing and so are the skin and eye reactions that come with it.
If you’ve noticed an increase in clients reporting swelling, itching, or discomfort during or after lash appointments, there’s a good reason. And it’s not always your adhesive to blame.
Let’s take a deeper look at why this happens and how you can protect your clients and your lash business with the right products and knowledge.
It’s Not Just About the Adhesive
When a client has a reaction, the finger is often pointed straight at the lash glue. But while adhesives are the most obvious culprit, they’re not the only one.
The truth is, most reactions are a combination of multiple factors — especially the full system of liquids we use during a lash appointment. That includes:
Each one of these plays a role in the chemical environment you’re creating on your client’s skin and lash line. If any of these products are low-quality or non-cosmetic grade, you may be setting your client up for irritation even if they've never reacted before.
The Problem with Substandard Lash Liquids
Many lash liquids on the market contain:
- High levels of alcohols and solvents
- Cheap, industrial-grade ingredients
- Irritants not designed for use on or near the skin
These harsh formulas strip the skin of moisture, disrupt its natural barrier, and leave it vulnerable to irritants. When the skin becomes dry, cracked, or inflamed, it's no longer protected and this opens the door to conditions like contact dermatitis, which can look like an allergic reaction but is actually a form of irritation.
Once the skin barrier is compromised, anything you apply, even cosmetic grade adhesive, can trigger a reaction.
Allergy Season: The Immune System Is Already on Edge
During spring and summer, our bodies are exposed to high levels of environmental allergens:
🌼 Pollen
🌿 Grass
🌬️ Dust
For clients who suffer from hay fever or seasonal allergies, their immune systems are already overstimulated. That means they’re much more likely to react to things they previously tolerated, including your lash products.
Even long-standing clients can suddenly develop redness, watering, or swelling and it's not necessarily because your products have changed, but because their tolerance has.

What Can Lash Artists Do?
1. Use a Fully Cosmetic-Grade System
Don’t just invest in a good adhesive, invest in a good system. Every liquid you use should be:
- Cosmetic-grade
- Skin-safe
- Made to work in harmony with each other
2. Avoid Harsh, Alcohol-Heavy Products
Products with high alcohol content may promise better bonding or drying, but they often cause skin to dry out and become irritated, especially during allergy season.
3. Be Skin Aware
Learn the signs of contact dermatitis, which can include:
- Redness
- Dryness or flaking
- Cracking at the lash line
- Burning or itching
These are often misdiagnosed as allergic reactions, but they are irritation-based and preventable with proper product selection.
