Every experienced lash technician knows that a successful set of eyelash extensions starts with a healthy natural lash. Before beginning any treatment, it’s essential to carefully assess the condition of your client’s lashes. Applying extensions to damaged lashes can compromise retention, cause further breakage, and ultimately lead to a poor client experience.
Damaged natural lashes can appear in several ways. You may notice lashes that look thin, overly short, twisted, or brittle, or lashes that are growing in multiple directions. In some cases, the natural lash may have visible breakage halfway along the shaft, which is often caused by previous improper extension applications, excessive rubbing, or mechanical damage from tools such as eyelash curlers. Sparse lash lines or uneven growth cycles can also indicate that the lashes are under stress. During your consultation and lash cleanse, take the time to examine the lash line under proper lighting and magnification so you can accurately assess the health of the natural lashes.

If you identify damaged lashes, it’s important to adjust your treatment plan accordingly. In many cases, lighter extensions and shorter lengths are the safest option. Choosing a thinner diameter helps minimise strain on the natural lash and allows it time to recover while still giving the client a noticeable enhancement. Avoid applying extensions to lashes that are severely weakened or in the process of growing back, as these are unlikely to support the weight of an extension.
Communication is also key. Clients may not always be aware that their natural lashes are compromised, so it’s helpful to explain what you’re seeing and why certain adjustments are necessary. Recommending a lash break, a strengthening serum, or improved aftercare can support lash health in the long term.
