The Hidden Truth Behind Cheap Lash Liquids: A Wake-Up Call for Lash Artists and choosing the brands you can trust.

Written on  April 17, 2024

In 2014, just two years into my lash career, I fell seriously ill. It turned out to be a result of prolonged exposure to low-grade lash products. This health crisis ignited my mission to develop high-quality, UK-made lash liquids that prioritised product safety. Ten years later, I'm grateful to still be thriving as a lash artist, thanks to the superior quality of my lash liquids, which I've poured my heart into perfecting over the years.

However, this decade-long journey has also opened my eyes to the darker side of the industry. I've witnessed firsthand the unethical practices of big brands who either lack awareness about the substandard products they're peddling or simply prioritise profits over integrity.

Keep reading to learn the full truth….

In the world of lash extensions, one of the most critical yet overlooked aspects is the quality of lash liquids used by artists and the truth behind these products may shock you.

This is why here at Eyelash Excellence we manufacture our lash liquids in the UK using the highest grade ingredients to ensure our products are safe and won’t destroy your health.

The Deception of Big Brands

It's easy to assume that big, well-known brands must offer safe and high-quality products. However, the reality is far from this assumption. Many of these brands simply purchase cheap lash liquids from overseas suppliers, slap on their label, and mark up the price significantly. The fancy label, high price point and fact that it is being sold by a “well known brand”  often blinds lash artists to the truth behind these products.

Many of you are lining the pockets of these big brands, who are making huge profits from their customers while selling them a substandard product which will destroy their health over time.

What many lash artists fail to realise is that these cheap lash liquids contain low-grade, usually industrial grade ingredients that can pose serious risks to both themselves and their clients (how else do you think these companies can buy them in for as little as $1). High grade ingredients designed to be used on the eyes do not come cheap!

From allergic reactions to long-term health damage, the consequences of using inferior products can be dire to both lash artist and their client and I have first hand experience of this. Yet, the pursuit of profit by brands often trumps concerns for safety for many lash suppliers. Maybe if these lash suppliers had fallen victim to over exposure and a sickness that nearly ended their career, they wouldn’t focus on profit over passion.

Despite the availability of ethical lash liquid suppliers who have entered the manufacturing market over the years, many lash suppliers continue to opt for the cheaper alternative. The allure of low wholesale prices outweighs the commitment to quality, leading to a perpetuation of substandard products in the industry. In an unregulated market, where import regulations are lax, this cycle continues unchecked and will continue.

As lash artists, it's essential that we now take a stand against the deceptive practices prevalent in the industry. Instead of blindly supporting big brands, we must educate ourselves about the products we use and demand transparency from our suppliers. This means that lash artists need to start asking questions of the brands they choose to invest in, don’t just assume that what you are buying is safe. Once you start to do this, many of you will sadly realise how you have been duped by these big companies who you assumed had your health in mind…wrong!!!

By choosing ethical suppliers who prioritise quality and safety, we can elevate the standards of our profession as well as protect the health of ourselves and our clients. Actively hunt out suppliers who openly talk about the truth of this subject and educate other lash artists on this topic. If your lash supplier is selling high grade lash products in this unregulated industry, they will be shouting this from the rooftops, so if they are silent, then you need to be asking questions.

Below you will find some tips to assist you with taking charge and understanding the quality of the products you use :

1 - Country or origin

Most of our lash liquids come from the Far East, where labour costs are low and safety standards fall far short of what countries such as the UK/EU/CAD/AUS would expect. And sadly this means low grade ingredients used to keep products costs low and be the biggest producers of lash liquids for these reasons. Ask your supplier to provide you with the country of manufacture, you will be surprised where your products come from.

2 - Ingredients list

You NEED to know what’s in your lash glue, I bet most of you do not know the ingredients. Isn’t that scary that you are working with a product which already has hazard warnings yet you have no idea of the ingredients list, so educate yourself. If the ingredients are not listed on the website, then ask your supplier to send them to you.

3 - MSDS. (Material safety data sheet)

However this lists ONLY hazardous ingredients, effects on health, flammability, handling, firefighting, first aid procedures etc. It won’t tell you the full ingredients.

Sadly many MSDS are false, which is not always easy to see to the untrained eye, but a simple way is to look at the ingredients, if it adds up exactly to 100% it's usually false, especially if no stabiliser is listed.

4 - Toxicology result

Every supplier of lash liquids should be able to provide you with a toxicologist report for each lash liquid product. Any company which imports from the Far East should be ethical and have their products independently tested by a toxicologist in their country to ensure what has been imported is actually the ingredients listed (this is a whole different topic). You are within your rights as a consumer to ask for this. In the UK, if I purchased products from example "The Far East” it would cost me £600-£900 to have that product tested, and technically every batch that was imported (I order every month for product freshness) would need to be tested. Every batch of my UK products is toxicologist tested as soon as they come off the machines.

I hope that this information serves as a valuable resource in empowering you to make informed decisions about the safety of the products you work with. It's alarming how many suppliers, who aren't experts in lash products, remain unaware of the potential dangers lurking in the items they sell.

Having personally experienced the repercussions of using unsafe products, I've dedicated the past nine years of my life to becoming an authority in this field. My journey has been fuelled by the desire to prevent others from falling victim to the same fate.
